Tom Cruise gets hated on a lot for being a pretty boy and a weirdo (if you've never actually researched Scientology, then please do before you make judgement that he is not crazy). He still gets some of the best roles and does more than a decent job at them. He is an Oscar worthy actor given the right roles, but he just makes too many blockbuster summer flicks to build a serious portfolio to have him go home with a statue., At least as a consolation he gets to go home with Katie Holmes.
1. Top GunA classic that belongs in anyone DVD collection. The scenes of the fight simulations, as well as the real thing, are way cool even the 100th time you watch it. Kelly McGillis is a bonafide 80s hottie and brings out one of the best serenades in movie history with "You've Lost That Loving Feeling". Tom is incredible as Maverick, who lives up to his name as a lone wolf chasing the ghost of his father.
2. Mission Impossible 1Tom does a great job bringing suspense and sophistication to an old favorite. Honestly, I think the movie was better than the television series, I guess the budget was a lot bigger too. To shows that he could be a perfect James bond, if only he were British.
3. Rain ManA great story line coupled with stellar performances from both Tom and Dustin Hoffman make for ne of the most referenced movies in pop culture, even today (see the Hangover). You really feel the tension and personal struggle that Tom has with his relationships and with his own morality. A complete shame he wasn't even Oscar nominated for this performance.
4. Days Of ThunderYou could almost call this movie Top Gun 2: Fighting with Cars. The racing scenes have you on the edge of your seat and Tom portrays the young up and coming NASCAR to a tee. Nicole Kidman stars opposite and together they steam up the screen, obviously there on screen attraction was real as they later married.
5. CocktailAnother movie where Tom plays an up and comer in the game trying to work his way to the top. Here you see him as he makes his climb, falls from grace, and in the end endures. What a performance.
6. The Color of MoneyIt's easy to be overshadowed by the ubber-talented Paul Newman, but Tom more than holds his own in this follow up to "The Hustler". Again, Tom as the up and comer has to struggle with harnessing his amazing talent and fiery emotion. The story is great, the acting is even better.
7. Risky BusinessHis breakout role where he famously slides across the floor in his socks, tell me that can't be considered as one of the Top Ten mose memorable movie moments. Even as a young actor he should his range and ability to mesmerize the audience.
8. The Last SamuraiPersonally not a huge fan of the movie itself, although there were certain aspects of the warrior culture that was interesting. The love story was pretty bad, compared with other movies. Tom holds his own and is pretty convincing as he tries to infultrate a closed society. The only other movie that compares is "Dances With Wolves" where Kevin Costner was nominated for Best Actor.
9. A Few Good MenThis ensemble cast delivers a suspenseful movie with all kinds of pshycological mind games that keeps your head spinning. One of the best lines ever come from this movie, "I want the truth!"; "You can't handle the truth!!!".
10. Born On The 4th Of JulyThe aftermath of 'nam wasn't the same after this movie. Tom does such an excellent job as a Vet who has to cope with a world were nobody cares about him. Funny, things haven't really changed in many ways.
